A romantic drama set in post war England.
Following a car accident in 1937 Hamish Parker is left with only one leg when war breaks out his partner Edward Campbell is sent to fight while he is left at home over the 6 years apart the two men lose no love but inevitably when they reunite they are incredibly different and struggle to reconcile who they have become.
Hamish is an art dealer and Edward an artist, once the war is over Hamish becomes involved selling the new art of the recently returned soldiers, seeing in it the brutality of war which he never saw. Edward’s art however has not changed since his return, painting his landscapes and the occasional portrait which kept him in good work before the war.
Edward eventually becomes disinterested in the world of high art and instead becomes involved with the local theatre company’s Christmas pantomime. Hamish doesn’t understand what Edward sees in this lower art and this too becomes a wedge within their relationship.
This script takes influence from multiple sources, the films of Powell and Pressburger and those of Merchant/Ivory also with The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and Maurice proving especially inspirational.
